First United Methodist Church in Hillsville, Virginia brought their youth to Macon for their annual project.

The group held a cook-out for the community at the Macon Rescue Mission on Hazel Street.

Every year the group does a service project that gives back to the community.

“The feeling that you get when you are able to make somebody’s day, that is all I live for,” said Kris Musser.

Kris Musser says this is his first year involved with the service project and says he likes the work they get to do.

“I like to think that I was able to make a difference or I was able to bring a smile or make someone’s day,” Musser said.

Youth Director, Jeff Scott says the kids get a chance to learn life lessons that can change their lives.

“A lot of our kids have never been exposed to some of the stuff they see by dealing with the homeless population or an impoverished population in some places.  Working for others is what we are called to do as Christians, and I think it has an impact on the way they live the rest of their lives,” said Scott.

The Macon Rescue Mission also handled out free bread and pastries to their guest.

According to Macon Rescue Mission more than 250 people came to the cook-out.
