What Breaks Your Heart?

I am preparing for a new series that I will preach at Out of the Box Worship Center beginning May 27th, it is called “Change Your World In 52 Days.” The series is about a man by the name of Nehemiah and there is a book in the Bible named after Nehemiah who wrote it. Our worship leader said this past week, after looking at the series, “I believe God is going to make some major change in people’s lives through this series.” I believe that to. I am excited, probably more than any series I have done so far. The Book of Nehemiah is written 425 years before Christ came on the scene and here are the first 4 verses of the book.

Nehemiah 1: 1-4 NIV

The words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah: In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa, Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem. They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire. ” When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.

Nehemiah was broken by the fact that the city walls in the city that represented the God he served were in ruins. This place was a testimony to Nehemiah of who God is and he was distraught that it had been allowed to lie in ruins, his heart was broken.

I want to know what breaks your heart. Would you take just a minute to leave a comment here. It may be that it makes you weep like Nehemiah, it may be that it makes you angry, it may be that it causes you to be depressed. Tell me what it is and be part of the sermon series coming May 27th.

What breaks my heart is that even the church no longer longs for God and God’s transforming presence. We have settled for a meager existence.

What breaks my heart is that so many Christians, even many of those known as Christian leaders, still carry a bag in which they collect “Spiritual Stones” to cast upon those who happen to disagree with them. Such a terrible thing it is to intentionally cause a Spiritual Death, yet be self convinced that what was done was a great personal “Christian” victory.

What breaks my heart is that our president of the United States has just endorsed gay marriage. I know this is tough subject but how can you say you personally think it’s ok when you call yourself a Christian. The Bible teaches that God considered this a sin (not a law that was misinterpreted) but God considered it a sin. Is it ok to say I personally think murder is ok? Is it ok to say I personally believe that it’s ok to steal? If it’s alright for us to decide which sins we think are “acceptable” then what’s off limits. Sin is Sin. We shouldn’t judge as we all are sinners but we also should not openly be condoning sin. A better statement would have been that we need to show love to everyone and treat everyone with love and not hate.

What breaks my heart is the cruelty/abuse of others and how we, as a whole, look the other way and allow it to continue. Whether it be emotional, verbal, or physical. I just don’t understand how one human could treat another so badly.
