Well, we did it. We debated all week if we were going to run the 18.6 miles or the 6.2 miles. I even got up on Saturday morning at 6am and called Dustin hoping that he would say he wanted to just run the 10K and he was leaning that way. I then asked him to call Kenneth to see how he was feeling and Kenneth was determined that we were going to stick to the 18.6 miles. I have to be honest and say that if it were not for Kenneth and Dustin I would have run the 6.2 but I am really glad that they held me accountable. For the past few years I have run the Salem Lake 10K and stood at the finish wishing I had done the 30K but not this time.
Dustin, Kenneth and I ran together for the first 14 miles and then Dustin pulled away, Kenneth and I ran together to the 15.5 mile and I stoped for a bathroom break. I probably shouldn’t have but I just felt like I had to take a break, I wanted so bad to finish without walking even one step. After stopping I felt pretty good but the next 3 miles I went back and forth from running to walking. I really never set a goal finish time but had hopes of being around 3 hours and I made it. I felt great, even after 13 miles (half marthon distance) I still felt great. I have run seven 26.2 mile Marathons in the past and I have never been sick after a race until this one. I have always preached to Dustin, “don’t do anything different in a race that you are not doing in training” and I did different. I never train with anything except water and yesterday I took an energy gel and some carbo beans. I am not certain these are what made me sick but something sure did. Anyone passing our vehicle on the Interstate had a show and it wasn’t pretty. I had problems with cramping after that but it wasn’t so bad. I was able to sleep a couple of hours and then went to Camp Dickenson to have dinner and speak for a few minutes.
I can’t wait for the Half Marathon in Mt. Airy November 1st and then the Myrtle Beach Marathon in February 2009.
I would love to share the entire results page but it is long so I will include the link here. http://www.twincitytc.org/RaceInformation/Results/tabid/67/Default.aspx
