Youth Mission to Inner City Atlanta 2009

In the early chill of morning a mother and her two children are turned out of a night shelter, not allowed to return until that evening. Where can she go, pushing a stroller and holding the hand of a four-year old?

We assist in establishing self-sufficiency…

How can she get a job, with no identification or resume?

By providing comprehensive education…

She never finished high school and can’t even operate a computer very well.

And supportive services…

For today, all she can think of is how to feed her children and get them some clean, warm clothes.

In a manner that respects human dignity.

Does anybody care? Have God and Jesus forgotten her?

We will soon be traveling to Atlanta with a group of Senior Youth from FUMC Downtown “Out of the Box” in Hillsville. Here is one of the ministries that we will be working with “Atlanta Day Shelter.”

We have many things planned while we are there. Working with The Atlanta Day Shelter is one of them. Their ministry is to homeless women and children and this will be our ministry for one of our days. We are praying now for the women and children that we will encounter.

  • 74% (4,976) of the homeless women and children in the City of Atlanta, Fulton and DeKalb Counties came to the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children in 2007.
  • 495 women obtained jobs.
  • 551 attended computer classes.
  • We serve over 60,000 meals each year.
  • We distribute clothes, shoes and household goods worth over $800,000 each year.

What We Do

The Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children is a Christian, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women and children obtain the resources they need to be able to escape their desperate situtation and begin happier, more independent lives.  To this end, with the help of our staff and volunteers, we offer a variety of services to women in the Atlanta area, including:

  • Assistance with basic needs such as food, clothing and medicine
  • Job counseling, resume assistance, and interview preperation
  • Computer training courses
  • Childcare and educational activities
  • Bible studies
  • Personal, respectful care for individual needs

Please consider helping us meet the needs of these women, by volunteering your time, or donating clothes, food or childcare supplies.  Monetary donations are also crucial to our continued ministry to the homeless women of Atlanta.  We are so blessed to have an enthusiastic staff, faithful volunteer base, and generous array of donors.
