I will try to blog some to let you know what we are doing with the 21 Day Daniel Fast. We started on Sunday May 2nd and our focus is to pray for the baptisms that will take place between now and Pentecost Sunday May 23rd. We are also praying for our children and grandchildren. Misty and I, along with several people from 1st UMC Hillsville and some from other local UMC’s, have decided to fast together for these days.
I will have to say in getting prepared to do this fast, in many ways it is harder than the total 40 day fast I did earlier this year. The reason being that so many people disagree as to what is to be eaten on a Daniel Fast. In a total fast you just don’t eat anything.
We are using as a reference and a devotional guide Elmer Towns book “The Daniel Fast” for Spiritual Breakthrough. Here is something Dr. Towns shares on page 31 of the book.
Daniel Fast Suggestions
Eliminate 1 meal a day and devote that time to prayer.
Eliminate 2 meals a day and pray during those mealtimes.
Eliminate all desserts.
Eliminate all rich, superfluous foods eaten only for pleasure.
Eat only necessities, and only during mealtime (no snacks).
Eliminate all drinks except water
Misty, Mike, and I have decided on the following
It is obvious that there are many different directions we can go with this fast. The purpose is a Spiritual one. We are praying and making a commitment to God to eat healthy and spend concentrated time in prayer over the next 21 days starting Sunday May 2nd, 2010.
We are eliminating all meat except broiled, baked, or grilled fish and we will only have this at a minimum.
We are eliminating all bread.
We are eliminating all sodas, tea, ect. With the exception of a morning cup of coffee and I may occasionally have some milk. Our main drink will be water.
We will mainly eat fruits, vegetables, and salads.
We will be giving up all desserts with the exception of Judah’s and Misty’s Birthday Celebrations this month.
Again, there is no room for legalism in a fast. There is however a commitment that has been made and we will follow that commitment. Yesterday was the first day of the fast and we ate only vegetables, salads, fruit and water. Amazing how difficult again it seems to limit what we will eat, when in reality we should always make it a priority to eat healthy.
I will update how things are going throughout the 21 days.
