Book Review: Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster

This is the third time I have read this Outstanding book by Richard Foster. The first time I read it many years ago, it changed my life. It was here that I found a need and a love for the Disciplines or what John Wesley calls, “The Means of Grace.” It was in this book that God started a love for fasting and other ways that we are to seek the Lord and to draw closer to Him.

The second time I read this book was with my staff of about 20 people in a Christian Children’s home and again, many of them said this was a life changing book for them and their spiritual lives.

Now, the 3rd time through I have had the joy of preaching a series on Sunday mornings through some of the disciplines listed in this book. I hope to be able to go back later in the year and address more of them.

Richard Foster is someone you can trust, if the book has his name associated with it, you can rest assured that you are going to get quality teaching. Foster has written several books expanding on particular disciplines in the book. Two that have are “Prayer” and “Freedon of Simplicity.” I also have other books by Foster and all of them are outstanding.

Covered in the book are Meditation, Prayer, Fasting, Study, Simplicity, Solitude, Submission, Service, Confession, Worship, Guidance, and Celebration. I have only just begun to preach through them, covering only 5 of the 12.

This book could change your life and draw you closer to the Creator of the Universe.

5 out of 5 stars for this great book.
