What do you do when your world is turned upside down?

A week ago today we were at the hospital and dad had come through the first night of his accident and things were looking real positive. We knew we had a long road to recovery ahead of us but we believed that dad would heal. I made plans for pastor Pam to preach for me the next day because my place was to be by my dads side. No one could have pulled me away. I spent Fathers Day Sunday with dad, seldom leaving his side. I sat with him through the night Sunday and Monday dad went to be with our Lord.

It was a shock, yes he was hurt, yes his condition was critical, but it is always a shock.

We came home without daddy. I have never known home without daddy, almost 48 years. Daddy has always been here. If I wanted to talk, dad was always here for me. Of I needed advice, dad was always here for me. If I had a question, dad always either had the answer or he found the answer. If I ever needed money, daddy always had what I needed. I am proud of the fact that when dad made me a loan I always paid it back to him. Everyone else could wait but dad always got his payment. Dad and mom have been my best friends all of my life and I have always understood that nobody loved me like they do. If it were not for my parents I would have nothing in his old world. I’m not speaking spiritually, I’m strictly speaking from a standpoint of my home, property, etc. Dad never said no to me when I asked and I always honored him. Dad was good to everyone, especially his family and close friends.

Dad and mom have been together 52 years, now it is mom and the rest of the family. We won’t leave her alone, we will never forsake her. When the Bible says to “Honor your father and mother” we often tell children that is for them but it isn’t. That passage is for us as adults, when the day comes that our parents are in need, we are to honor them, to care for them, to make sure their needs are met as they have done for us. Mama will be taken care of. Misty and I talked about this before we were ever married, none of our parents will ever be abandoned.

Our world has come to a standstill but we know it can’t stay there. We are numb but we know the feeling will come back. We are so broken, but we are not crushed. It will take a while for us to he back into the rhythm of life and that is to be expected. I am the type of person that likes to get things done and now I have to just rest. The world will never be the same, not our world anyway. It literally feels to me like the earth has shifted and that we are someplace else, not where we are supposed to be. I can’t imagine the feelings, emotions, and hurt my mom is experiencing.

We are going to praise God.

We are thankful for the many years we had with dad, most of which he was very healthy and happy. We are going to praise God that daddy is in heaven for all eternity. We are going to praise God that we will see and be with daddy again, this is not the end.

We are going to praise God. When we start to name our blessings it is impossible to miss that God is here with us and in the midst of all that we are going through.
