Perhaps the largest group of runners ever took part in the 23rd annual Chautauqua 5K run held Saturday morning in Wytheville.
A total of 191 runners competed in the 3.1-mile race. That is believed to be the most ever. There were 170 runners in last year’s race and 151 the year before that. The race is sponsored each year by Willis Chiropractic of Wytheville.
The male and female divisions of the race were won by past champions. It was the fourth time that Ethan Coffey has won. Coffey covered the distance in a time of 15:52. He won it last year in 15:44.
Although Coffey finished nearly a minute and a half faster than the second place runner (Austin Grubb in 17:14), he was a little off on the course record of 15:15 set in 1992 by Tony Patrick.
It was the second time that Dena Spickard has won the female race. She won two years ago. The Marion native finished the course in 19:08. The female course record is 17:48, which was set last year by Lauretta Dezubay.
Spickard recently graduated from James Madison University where she ran on the track and cross country teams for five years. She said it was a “little windy” Saturday morning but otherwise the conditions were nice.
Coffey said he also liked the conditions. Although it was sunny with moderate (in the 70s) temperatures, he said it was a lot better than the conditions in which he normally trains in his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina.
Coffey recently graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh where he ran on the cross country and track teams. He is currently in the U.S. Navy.
Coffey is training for his second Marine Corps Marathon. Last year he ran it in 2:40:32.
“I really like this course,” he said. “I’m getting used to it now. The hills don’t jump out at me like they used to.”
Coffey has been running the race in Wytheville because he visits his parents here, Tom and Ilona Coffey, who moved here several years ago from Northern Virginia.
Here are the times for all of the finishers:
