O the blessedness of those who mourn (weep)

SNL this week is based on the Matthew 5 passage that says a person is blessed who mourns. What in the world does that mean?

There are nine different Greek words used in the New Testament to refer to grief in some way, nine different Greek verbs used to describe sadness.

There need to be a lot of words because sadness is a large part of life.

As I was doing research for the sermon I came across this picture and I have blogged about it before. Watch it at your own risk. There is a risk that you will become so burdened that you life could change.

Kevin Carter, the photographer who took this picture, also took his own life soon after. The picture was published in the NY Times and he won a Pulitzer prize for it, committing suicide 2 months later. What we don’t see is that Mr. Carter chased away the vulture and the girl making her way to the feeding station. Here is what the NY Times reported:
” Afterwards, he told an interviewer, he sat under a tree for a long time, “smoking cigarettes and crying”. His father, Mr Jimmy Carter laid last night: “Kevin always carried around the horror of the work he did.” – The New York Times To read more on Kevin Carter and his life’s work please visit: http://www.flatrock.org.nz/topics/odds_and_oddities/ultimate_in_unfair.htm
