Bishop Will Willimon on Guaranteed Appointments

I am an advocate of doing away with guaranteed appointments for Elders in the UMC. Here is an interview Shane Raynor recently did with Bishop Will Willimon at the 2012 General Conference of the UMC on this topic.

I believe that “guaranteed” appointments are a hindrance and a roadblock to the revival of the church. It plugs the system up with folks who’ve lost their call and are doing their own will instead of God’s. I’ve known too many that did irreparable harm to local congregations just so that they could hang on until retirement. If they can’t be fruitful in some measurable way, retrain them, move them or lose them.
