Book Notes: “Why” by Anne Graham Lotz

As always when I preach I try to find resources to help in the planning. I am starting a 4 week series on the “Why” questions that we ask at Out Of The Box Worship Center this Sunday so here we go.

Anne takes a more spiritual approach to the “why” questions or at least that is the way I see it in the book. In other words there are a lot of great answers and much thought in the pages of this small book and most of them lean toward when we don’t understand, we have faith. Now, I am not against this stance, I too believe that when we don’t understand that we hold to our faith in the God of the universe and know that He will hold it all together.

Here are a few quotes from the book that may entice you to read further.

“When I don’t understand why, I trust Him because . . . God can lift me up to soar above the storms in my life.”

“Someone has said that if God were small enough for us to understand, He would not be big enough to save us.”

I love this quote and it is absolutely right. However, I do believe that God has given us the ultimate resource in the Bible to understand who He is and how He acts.

“The kind of trust God wants us to have cannot be learned in comfort and ease.”

“There is a greater miracle than physical healing! It’s the miracle of the Resurrection! Be encouraged!”

“So He does not protect those He loves from bad things happening but uses bad things to fulfill His greater plan.”

It is a great book, filled with stories from Anne’s life of how she has learned to trust God and how she has understood the “why” questions. It is well worth the price of the book.

I give it 4 of 5 stars.
