I have been waiting for this one to come out in anticipation of reading it. The book is all about being the leader that God has called you to be. By that I mean that we are to be our quirky selves. We are to discover who it is that God has molded us to be, we work on our strengths and lead in our own quirky way. This is not to say that one shouldn’t be a lifelong learner in the area of leadership, we should be. However, there are some things that you do that in many leadership books would be called crazy or impossible as a leader. You have to discover who you are and help those you lead to understand who you are and what they can expect, then lead in that way.
We all know that there really are some things that just will not work when it comes to leadership. We have to recognize what those things are and if they are truly bad things then we need to discipline ourselves to rid ourselves of those habits or quirks and move on.
John has challenged the status quo, he has taken to task those who say there is one way to lead and you can’t be successful any other way and he has done a good job in that challenge. I believe John is right on target for 2013, people are getting better at being themselves. People are looking for REAL and that is what this book is really about.
I like the book. I have learned some things and I consider myself to have enhanced my leadership ability by reading this book.
Now for the one concern that I have.
This is a book about Christians and basically about church leadership. I will be the first to say that I will challenge the status quo of the way we do things in church. I have no concern with that part of the book. What concerns me is John has done what I see a lot of other preachers and authors beginning to do more and more today and that is to use language that in my opinion doesn’t belong with us as Christ Followers. Jesus said that we are to be in the world but not of the world. Now, I am sure that John would defend his way of speaking in the book, his choice of words and that is fine. You will have to decide for yourself.
It is a good book, one that we can learn from and I would recommend it with that one caution. You may be caught off guard with some of the language that is used.
