40/50/90/3000 Devotional: Day 36- March 30th, 2010

Day 36 – March 30, 2010

Why Don’t We Do Church Outside the Box?

Hebrews 10: 24-25 (TNIV)

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25not giving up
meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you
see the Day approaching.
We do typical church on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. Why?
Because we’ve always done it that way?
I would submit that the average person who goes to church on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. is there at that
time because we have always done it that way.
I admire the folks who are “stepping outside the box” and having worship service on Saturday evenings
or some other time during the week that meets the needs of a changing world. Being a pastor, I
understand what it is to take on new responsibilities while never dropping old responsibilities, so I hope
when we take on new worship times that we consider dropping the times that are not working anymore.
What if we started doing worship services at different times during the week? We recently had a great
number of teens show up at the church at 6 a.m. to help with breakfast for an event with which we were
involved. I realized then that they want to be here, but they live busy lives just as we do. Offer them a
time when they can come, and they will.
We live in a time where people seldom fight over Blue Laws anymore, and if you have no idea what a
Blue Law is, then you fit the category I am speaking of.
People have responsibilities like no other time in history. There are more people employed in jobs where
they have to work on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. Law Enforcement, Hospitals, Convenience Stores,
Hotels, Restaurants, etc. These things are realities, and we need to provide worship for those who do not
have a typical 9:00-5:00 job.

We don’t find prescribed meeting times in the Bible, only a prescription to meet together.

Prayer: Father, help us to step outside the boxes we have placed ourselves in. These are not boxes that
you put together and said we must stay here.

Lord, help us to think outside the box, then step outside the
box, in faith. Amen.
